And…I’m back with another FANTASTIC Tasty Virtual Book Tour featuring the swoon-worthy writing of the lovely Vivienne Lorret. I was lucky enough to feature the first book in her new Rakes of Fallow Hall series, The Elusive Lord Everhart, and now I have the follow-up. Read on for a review of Book 2, The Devilish Mr. Danvers and a killer giveaway of her entire Wallflower series (it’s so good, y’all).
With her Rakes of Fallow Hall series, Lorret has basically created a dream scenario for every heterosexual female and homosexual male historical romance reader: Three amazingly attractive and brooding rogues live together in a country house, basking in one another’s hotness, and wagering on their ability to remain unmarried over the course of the upcoming year.
Challenge accepted, boys.
With Lord Everhart now on the losing side of this bachelor’s bet (thanks to the spinster charms of one Calliope Croft), Rafe Danvers is determined to marry off Lord Montwood and claim the ten thousand pound winnings as his own. Left at the alter years ago, Rafe has no interest in love and marriage. His only goal is to reclaim the Greyson Park estate and the Danvers family treasure hidden within its walls. The last person he expects to find there is the intriguing Hedley Sinclair, the younger sister of his former fiancée. After inheriting Greyson Park, Hedley is finally attempting to start a life away from her horrid family. But with her mother and sister threatening her well-being at every turn, an estate in stunning disrepair, and the charming Rafe Danvers claiming ownership over Greyson Park, and possibly her heart, the odds are clearly stacked against her.
The Devilish Mr. Danvers is a story of layers. On one level you have a jilted bridegroom holding one hell of a grudge, but above Rafe’s wounded pride is his love of family and his determination to restore the Danvers’ good name. Hedley’s life of seclusion and neglect should have left her broken, but instead she’s attempting to forge a life for herself. There’s a romance between these two perfectly imperfect people that’s not just about love and coupling, but somehow about redemption as well. Hedley and Rafe have been put through life’s ringer, but are still determined to hold on to the hope of something more–for themselves, for Greyson Park, for the future.
They embody what I love best about Lorret’s couples: Her heroes and heroines are always dashing and enticing, but never too-good-to-be-true. Their personal imperfections are always supplemented by physical ones (from Rafe’s slightly crooked-toothed but endearing smile to Hedley’s somewhat odd but intriguing face). Their romance never tries to erase those imperfections; instead they’re celebrated. In that regard, Greyson Park is the perfect stand-in for Hedley and Rafe’s romance: It’s a little uneven, a little ragged around the edges, but it just fits.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about this series. Watching the Fallow Hall boys succumb to love one by one is just delightful, and I can’t wait to find out what Lorret has in store for Lord Montwood.
